There are many reasons why the Emergency has defined my journalism and my politics. One among them is the decision of the Indira Gandhi government to subject several newspapers including The Indian Express to pre-censorship and to appoint the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Karnataka as the Chief Censor in the state. As a result, all editorial matter including editorials, columns and news reports had to be sent to his office for clearance. The IGP had a battery of information department officials and policemen to assist him in this task. They would edit out sentences critical of the government and only the version approved by the Chief Censor could go to print. In other words, a man in uniform had virtually become our Editor! It is simply not possible to forget the humiliation that the government of the day heaped on media professionals.This experience of mine has substantially influenced my ‘politics’. By ‘politics’, I mean the political line that I have pursued in my writings. If a reader were to pull out a common strand, it would be my belief in the core values in the Indian Constitution and the democratic way of life and my aversion to anything which is said or done which weakens the unity and integrity of India.I believe that India is the most vibrant democracy in the world and also the most diverse society in the world. Be it religion, ethnicity or language (the last language census said Indians spoke over 120 languages and 170 dialects), there is no other nation in the world which is as heterogeneous as ours. In fact, the concept of unity in the midst of such plurality is unheard of elsewhere–history has shown that just a Shia-Sunni or a Protestant-Catholic divide is enough to break up nations. But 1.4 billion citizens of India have proved that unity in diversity is not just a slogan but a living creed.

A. Surya Prakash is a prolific author, whose books have been widely acclaimed and have won accolades. He is a regular columnist and a leading commentator on Indian Constitutional and Parliamentary issues and governance. He is also known for his well-researched interventions on national issues. This book is a collection of articles published by the author over a period of time. Much of his writing reflects the social, political and economic issues that have emerged over the years and impacted India’s politics and governance. Given his special interest in the working of the constitution, and the march of democracy since independence, the book contains chapters which specifically deal with constitutional issues, the working of parliament, the system of justice, the executive and the media. The author feels that negating the facts of history has been a major pastime of the Nehruvian and Marxist schools and that the distortions introduced by these schools need to be challenged and corrected in the current phase of national politics.
