Britain gave dominion status to Pakistan and India on the 15th of August, 1947. King George VI was the constitutional head of both countries. So both the countries were obliged to appoint governor-generals as representatives to the King. The last viceroy of India Lord Mountbatten was the likely candidate of governor-generalship for the new states. But Pakistani leader Quaid-i-Azam refused to accept Lord Mountbatten as Pakistan’s governor-general. He himself took charge of this post. While Indian leader Pandit Nehru accepted Lord Mountbatten as the governor-general of India. Then, near India Gate in Delhi, the jubilant crowds of Indians chanted ‘long live Lord Mountbatten’ on the eve of independence.
