Geopolitically, Kazakhstan is an important country in Central Asia. Kazakhstan is the second country in terms of area among the newly independent countries after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. While the first country is Russia which is considered to be the real representative of former Soviet Union. Kazakhstan’s geopolitical location between Russia and Asia along with a long border with China gives it strategic importance. India does not share a border with Kazakhstan, yet the geopolitical location of Kazakhstan makes the country important for India. Because India has direct interests in the states which border Kazakhstan. India-Kazakhstan relations are long-standing and multifaceted. But mainly there are three points which make Kazakhstan important for India. First, its geo-strategic location, second its economic potential especially its energy resources, and third its multi-ethnic and secular composition. In fact, three countries of Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan share borders with China. In which Kazakhstan with about 1533 km determines the largest strategic border with China.
