India’s Modi Catches China Off Guard with Taiwan-Tibet Card

Shubhangi Sharma Explains on Finepoint
Since securing a historic third term as India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has signaled continuity in both domestic and foreign policies, with a clear message of maintaining a firm stance against China. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), although not securing an absolute majority, formed a stable government through alliances, reinforcing Modi’s leadership.

India-China relations, already strained due to a prolonged standoff at the Himalayan border, have gotten off to a cold start under Modi’s new term. Despite global leaders swiftly congratulating Modi on his re-election, Chinese President Xi Jinping has notably abstained from doing so directly. This absence contrasts sharply with Xi’s quick acknowledgments of other regional leaders in the past.

In response to the geopolitical tension, Modi acknowledged a congratulatory message from Taiwanese President Lai Ching-Te, marking a significant shift as India has traditionally adhered to the One China Policy. Additionally, India is planning to rename areas in Tibet, signaling a direct challenge to China’s territorial assertions.

China, finding itself in a precarious position, has responded through various channels, including a message from the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the new Chinese ambassador to India. An editorial from the CCP’s Global Times suggests that China seeks positive signals from India to improve bilateral relations. However, India’s stance remains clear: normalization of relations is contingent on resolving the border standoff.
