Rajni Kothari is remembered as an institution builder and as a politically active public intellectual. Moreover, he endeavoured to bring the government closer to the people by bringing together on one platform activists, intellectuals, politicians, journalists and policy makers to debate and discuss agendas through journals like Seminar and Lokayan. He was an important non-Marxian leftist and a highly appreciated academic. Like all great institution builders, his achievements lie not only in the large number of insightful books and articles he published, but also in supporting and helping grow a number of intellectuals and researchers in post-independence India.
