Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK): An Unresolved Conflict
Imagine a place whose legal ownership belongs to India, yet is under the control of Pakistan. Yes, we are talking about PoK, Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. Today, we delve into the complex and sensitive issue of whether India is poised to reclaim PoK.
Introduction
While India celebrates prominent personalities like Anjali Arora, Virat Kohli, and Mary Kom, the story of PoK remains an unresolved issue that demands our attention. The question at hand: Is India ready to reclaim PoK?
Historical Context
In 1947, as India gained independence, 565 princely states had to decide whether to join India or Pakistan. Among them was Kashmir. Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir faced a dilemma—should he join Islamic Pakistan or democratic India? His indecision led to a series of events that culminated in Pakistan’s invasion of Kashmir.
The Instrument of Accession
Facing an invasion, Maharaja Hari Singh sought help from India, signing the Instrument of Accession, which led to Indian forces being deployed in Kashmir. The conflict resulted in a ceasefire brokered by the UN, establishing the Line of Control (LoC) and leaving PoK under Pakistani control.
The Struggle Continues
The ceasefire did not bring peace. PoK has been a hotbed of terrorism, strikes, and stone-pelting incidents. Despite Pakistan’s efforts to control the region, there is a growing unrest among the PoK residents, many of whom now look towards India for a better future.
Current Situation
India’s abrogation of Article 370 has brought significant changes to Jammu and Kashmir. Development projects, infrastructure improvements, and a reduction in terrorism have marked a new era for the region. In contrast, PoK struggles with basic amenities, limited educational and medical facilities, and high unemployment.
The Call for Reunification
There is an increasing demand from PoK residents for reunification with India. Protests against Pakistani rule, calls for basic rights, and appeals to the Indian government highlight the deteriorating conditions in PoK.
India’s Stand
Indian leaders, including Rajnath Singh and Dr. S. Jaishankar, believe that the people of PoK will eventually seek to join India willingly. The Indian government is committed to protecting its territory and supporting the aspirations of PoK residents.
