ध्यान क्या है, ये एक बड़ा ही गहरा प्रश्न है, लेकिन ध्यान में उतरने से पहले ध्यान को जानने के बारे में बहुत लोगों की जिज्ञासाएँ रहती हैं। जबकी ध्यान एक ऐसी प्रणाली और प्रक्रिया है कि इसे सीधे ही सीखा जाना चाहिए, अनुभव किया जाना चाहिए। जैसे कोई व्यक्ति यदि तैरना चाहता हो तो उसे सीधे पानी में उतरकर अभ्यास करते हुए उसे अनुभव करना चाहिए, लेकिन फिर भी जिज्ञासुओं के मन में ये प्रश्न तो रहता ही है कि ध्यान क्या होता है? और ध्यान करने से क्या होगा? हालाँकि इस छोटे से प्रश्न का उत्तर इतना बड़ा और इतना विराट है कि उसे एक छोटे से अंश में समाहित करना बड़ा गलत होगा, लेकिन फिर भी जो बिल्कुल नया साधक है, योग में बिल्कुल ही नया है, जो बिल्कुल नया प्रशिक्षु ध्यानी है, उसके लिए केवल इतना कहा जा सकता है कि ध्यान का तात्पर्य है—अपने अस्तित्व का बोध करना, अर्थात् अस्तित्व का ज्ञान करना और चारों तरफ जो अस्तित्व विचर रहा है प्रतिपल, उसका बोध करना।

हिंदी के प्रतिष्ठित लेखक महेश दत्त शर्मा का लेखन कार्य सन् 1983 में आरंभ हुआ, जब वे हाईस्कूल में अध्ययनरत थे। बुंदेलखंड विश्वविद्यालय, झाँसी से 1989 में हिंदी में स्नातकोत्तर।

I have observed that the handicapped resent pity because of their innate handicaps don’t like the pitiable help from anybody because of their disposition and God-given willpower.
