A short biography of Swami Vivekananda by Swami Gambhirananda

He introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893.

Swami Vivekananda (Bengali: 12 January 1863 – 4 July 1902), born Narendranath Datta was an Indian Hindu monk, a chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and is credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the late 19th century. He was a major force in the revival of Hinduism in India, and contributed to the concept of Indian nationalism as a tool of fight against the British empire in colonial India. Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. He is perhaps best known for his speech which began with the words - "Sisters and brothers of America .. in which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893.Born into an aristocratic Bengali Kayastha family of Calcutta, Vivekananda was inclined towards spirituality. He was influenced by his guru, Ramakrishna, from whom he learnt that all living beings were an embodiment of the divine self; therefore, service to God could be rendered by service to humankind. After Ramakrishna's death, Vivekananda toured the Indian subcontinent extensively and acquired first-hand knowledge of the conditions prevailing in British India. He later travelled to the United States, representing India at the 1893 Parliament of the World's Religions. Vivekananda conducted hundreds of public and private lectures and classes, disseminating tenets of Hindu philosophy in the United States, England and Europe. In India, Vivekananda is regarded as a patriotic saint, and his birthday is celebrated as National Youth Day.As a young person of 23 years or so, Swami Vivekananda spoke to the Master in this strain: "I want to remain immersed in samadhi for three or four days, continuously, breaking it only for a little food." But the Master reprimanded him: "Shame on you! You are seeking such an insignificant thing. There is a state higher than that even. Is it not you who sing, 'Thou art all that exists?' I thought you would be like a banyan, sheltering thousands from the scorching misery of the world. But now I see you seek your own liberation." A few days later, however, Shri Ramakrishna blessed him with the experience of Nirvikalpa Samadhi. When the beloved disciple came back from that state, the Master said: "Now, then the Mother has shown you everything. Just as a treasure is locked in a box, so will this realization be hidden from you and the key shall remain with me. You have work to do. When you have finished it, the treasure will be unlocked again, and you will know everything then just as you do now." And, thus, the beloved disciple of the Master worked on incessantly for the next 16 years with a zeal that one rarely sees, surmounting mountain high and unthinkable obstacles, not even caring for his own liberation on the way, till his body broke down under the stress of intense work at the relatively young age of 39 years and five months. And a work was set into motion that laid a strong foundation once more for Hinduism to stand on a firm footing - this time against the onslaught of narrow-mindedness and sectarianism and bigotry on the one hand and western and modern science on the other hand - and thereby vindicating Sri Krishna's teaching that the Lord manifests his power again and again to protect the Eternal Religion!

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose once said: “Swamiji harmonized the East and the West, religion and science, past and present. And that is why he is great. Our countrymen have gained unprecedented self-respect, self-reliance and self-assertion from his teachings.” Vivekananda was successful in constructing a virtual bridge between the culture of East and the West. He interpreted the Hindu scriptures, philosophy and the way of life to the Western people. He made them realize that in spite of poverty and backwardness, India had a great contribution to make to world culture. He played a key role in ending India's cultural isolation from the rest of the world.

Bhaktiyoga by Swami Vivekananda

जब प्रेम का यह उच्चतम आदर्श प्राप्त हो जाता है, तो ज्ञान फिर न जाने कहाँ चला जाता है। तब भला ज्ञान की इच्छा भी कौन करे? तब तो मुक्ति, उद्धार, निर्वाण की बातें न जाने कहाँ गायब हो जाती हैं। इस दैवी प्रेम में छके रहने से फिर भला कौन मुक्त होना चाहेगा? ''प्रभो! मुझे धन, जन, सौन्दर्य, विद्या, यहाँ तक कि मुक्ति भी नहीं चाहिए। बस इतनी ही साध है कि जन्म जन्म में तुम्हारे प्रति मेरी अहैतुकी भक्ति बनी रहे।'' भक्त कहता है, ''मैं शक्कर हो जाना नहीं चाहता, मुझे तो शक्कर खाना अच्छा लगता है।'' तब भला कौन मुक्त हो जाने की इच्छा करेगा? कौन भगवान के साथ एक हो जाने की कामना करेगा? भक्त कहता है, ''मैं जानता हूँ कि वे और मैं दोनों एक हैं, पर तो भी मैं उनसे अपने को अलग रखकर उन प्रियतम का सम्भोग करूँगा।'' प्रेम के लिए प्रेम - यही भक्त का सर्वोच्च सुख है

स्वामी विवेकानंद

स्वामी विवेकानंद का जन्म 12 जनवरी, 1863 को कलकत्ता में हुआ था।

Karma Yoga

The word Karma is derived from the Sanskrit Kri, to do; all action is Karma. Technically, this word also means the effects of actions. In connection with metaphysics, it sometimes means the effects, of which our past actions were the causes. But in Karma-Yoga we have simply to do with the word Karma as meaning work. The goal of mankind is knowledge. That is the one ideal placed before us by Eastern philosophy. Pleasure is not the goal of man, but knowledge. Pleasure and happiness come to an end. It is a mistake to suppose that pleasure is the goal.

Raja-Yoga

The subject of the present book is that form of Yoga known as Raja-Yoga. The aphorisms of Patanjali are the highest authority on Raja-Yoga, and form its textbook. The other philosophers, though occasionally differing from Patanjali in some philosophical points, have, as a rule, acceded to his method of practice a decided consent. The first part of this book comprises several lectures to classes delivered by the present writer in New York. The second part is a rather free translation of the aphorisms (Sutras) of Patanjali, with a running commentary.

Jnana-Yoga

According to ancient Vedic texts, there are four main paths of Yoga. Jnana Yoga is said to be the most difficult and complex amongst them. A jnana yoga follower needs to possess great will power and intellectual prowess to discipline the mind and transcend its varied thoughts and habits.

Jnana Yoga is also known as the wisdom yoga. The principal goal of Jnana yogis is to attain liberation from this materialistic Maya world and merge with the superior inner self or the ‘Atman’.

Bhakti-Yoga is a real, genuine search after the Lord, a search beginning, continuing, and ending in love. One single moment of the madness of extreme love to God brings us eternal freedom. "Bhakti", says Nârada in his explanation of the Bhakti-aphorisms, "is intense love to God"; "When a man gets it, he loves all, hates none; he becomes satisfied for ever"; "This love cannot be reduced to any earthly benefit", because so long as worldly desires last, that kind of love does not come; "Bhakti is greater than karma, greater than Yoga, because these are intended for an object in view, while Bhakti is its own fruition, its own means and its own end."
