The Global Indian Diaspora [Lec 02]

The Global Indian Diaspora – Lec 02; UCLA, 4 April 2013. Some introductory remarks on India and on the parameters of this course. What is the nature of middle class Indian society? How are Indians to be characterized in the US? Indians and the category of “Asian Americans”. Some broad considerations about migration: the mobility of Indians, and the view of colonial society; the Indian Ocean world trading system; the experience of indentured migrations, commencing in the 19th century; post-World War II migrations to Britain and Europe; the labor diaspora to the Gulf; and the origins of the Indian diaspora in the US, in the late 19th century, but principally after the INS Act of 1965.
