The Global Indian Diaspora [Lec 03]; UCLA, 9 April 2013. (Some notes for students on the assignment – writing a paper on one of the Indian diasporic films.) General comments on position of Indians in the diaspora; the case of Dubai, very briefly. Principal subject of lecture: Indian indentured system and migrations to the Caribbean, Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, and elsewhere; general features of this system; histories of these migrations–conditions of departure, and the condition of Indian society in the mid-19th century. What were the circumstances under which Indians left as indentured migrants? What were their economic conditions? There was distress in the agrarian countryside; on the other hand, the abolition of slavery had created the need for labor.
