The Global Indian Diaspora [Lec 04]; UCLA, 11 April 2013. Lecture begins with Powerpoint with maps. More details on Indian indentured migrants; male-female sex ratios; point of origin for Indian migrants; the ‘middle passage’ –the passage; rules governing emigration; the character of the so-called coolie; colonial literature and its representations of ‘coolies’; anthology on ‘coolitude’ by Khal Thorabully; the rumor bazaar; what happens to caste in the diasporic context; the nature of plantation life, and the role of religion; impact of migration on notions of hierarchy. Was indentured migration a delivery from the yoke of servitude in India? Migration may have nonetheless been liberating. The question of caste in Indian diasporic communities is an interesting and complex one.
