The Global Indian Diaspora [Lec 16]

The Global Indian Diaspora [Lec 16]; UCLA, Lecture of 23 May 2013. Women of the Indian diaspora. Their struggles for rights; marriage, dating, and social life; women and the nation–some brief comparisons are offered with the West. Women are more prominent in higher education in the sciences in India than in the West. I offer some brief thoughts on “the Namesake”, “Bend It Like Beckham”, and “Mississippi Masala”, and writers such as Chitra Divakaruni. We move on to discussions of arranged marriage, internet marriage ads, and internet marriage sites.
