The Global Indian Diaspora [Lec 19]

The Global Indian Diaspora [Lec 19]; UCLA, Lecture of 5 June 2013. Concluding part of lecture on the struggles of Indians in the diaspora, with special emphasis on Dubai and the Gulf States. What, if any, are the ways in which Indians forge alliances with minority groups? Four different settings in which struggles by Indians for rights take place: a. background of ethnic/black nationalism (expulsion of Indians from Uganda & Kenya, or from Sri Lanka; b. liberal/secular states; c. states where there is a deep ethnic/racial divide, as in Trinidad or Guyana, where Indians are a majority, or certainly close to one; struggles of Indian migrant labor without any citizenship (or even human) rights. We look briefly at struggles of Indians in Dubai, Fiji, Malaysia. Does the Indian Government support these struggles? How does the Indian Government view these overseas Indians? Distinctions between NRI, PIO, and OCI. Why does the Indian government support some Indians more than others? What are the templates of citizenship?
