John Dalton is the man – credited today with the development of atomic theory. However, It would be surprising for many people today to know that the theory of atoms was actually formulated thousands of years ago by an Indian sage and philosopher. The first Indian scientist who formulated ideas about the atom in a systematic manner was Sage Kanad who lived in the 6th century B.C.
Kanad was born in Dwarka, Gujrat. His real name was Rishi Kashyap. He was the son of a philosopher named Ulka. From his child days Kashyapa displayed a keen sense of service. He was always fascinated with minute things.
All his findings can be found in the Vaishishika Darshana,
The school founded by Kanada explains the creation and existence of the universe by proposing an atomistic theory, applying logic and realism, and is one of the earliest known systematic realist ontology in human history. Kaṇada suggested that everything can be subdivided, but this subdivision cannot go on forever, and there must be smallest entities called paramanu and that cannot be divided, that are eternal, that aggregate in different ways to yield complex substances and bodies with unique identity, a process that involves heat, and this is the basis for all material existence.
He also stated that Every object of creation is made of atoms or paramanus, which in turn connect with each other to form molecules or any. Atoms are eternal, and their combinations constitute the empirical material world.
